Changing the Face Of Medicine.

I've long been discouraged with conventional medicine and our health care system. To me, it's like driving an old, beat up car. You can only get so many 'tune-ups' or repairs and continue to drive it before it completely dies. And when you DO finally turn it in for a new vehicle, you realize the money you dumped into the repairs would have been better spent on a new car all together.
That's what our government keeps doing. Throwing money at temporary repairs to our healthcare system which feed the disease and create more problems in the long run. Doctors have no incentive to truly cure a patient when they get paid to throw drugs at every pain, ache and cough. It seems even doctors with national recognition, touted on Oprah and viewed by the general public as "America's Doctors", can succumb to the typical American 'sell out'. For example, Dr. Barry Sears. I am not saying his concepts and ideas aren't valid. They are. Admittedly, the man is a genius for crying out loud with a PhD and 13 U.S. Patents under his belt, not to mention he's one of the foremost researchers in the field of nutrition, diet and hormones . I heard him lecture this past Saturday at my nutrition school, and trust me, he knows what he's talking about. I don't argue that. Slient Inflammation. It's the underlying factor of every chronic disease including obesity, diabetes, cancer, and anything ending in '-itis'. His talk was informative and filled with facts. He prescribed food as a drug and his "Zone Diet" as the best prescription for an anti-inflammatory lifestyle. And I am all for it. Until I was in line at Whole Foods shortly after his lecture and decided to pick up a "Zone" bar. Wow. Three grams saturated fat (15% of the RDA). Eighteen grams of sugar and only two grams of fiber. With ingredients including fractionated palm kernal oil, glycerin (isn't that in my hand lotion?) and yes, fructose. Snickers makes a healthier bar with less calories and saturated fat and more fiber (The Snickers Marathon Bar, Dark Chocolate Crunch). I was hoping that somehow, the official Zone bars were not associated with Dr. Sears and his immensely popular diet. No such luck. They are sold on "Dr. Sears ZONE", the OFFICIAL Site of Dr. Barry Sears' Zone Diet." I hate that the most reputable doctors in the country are 'fooling' the country into thinking their products are healthy. And believe me, we're buying it.
I just don't get it. To me, it's disappointing. (In his defense, the Zone bars sold on Barry Sears' site seem to be different and a little bit better nutritionally than the Zone Perfect Bars you typcially see in the stores which look like this. I haven't been able to figure out if Sears is involved with the development of these bars made by, um, Abbott Labaratories.)
But my weekend was saved by two very inspiring and what I found to be, authentic doctors: Dr. David Katz and Dr. Mark Hyman. These men are single handedly changing the face of medicine and challenging conventional medical wisdom. And they are DOCTORS. They speak from a foundation of science backed with intensive research and studies. They are willing to uncover the scams and the lies that our government supports in the name of pharmaceutical dollars. I could go on forever about all the amazing things these two men are accomplishing, but for the most part I will direct you to their websites to learn more yourselves. Unfortunately, because they aren't selling bars, protein powders, knifes and kitchen utensils, you may not be as familiar with their names as Dr. Oz or Dr. Barry Sears.
And much of what they are saying is congruent with those more well known doctors. But their message is not tainted by commercialism or products contradictory to their messages. If anything, they give away their products and information for FREE!!!
For example, Dr. David Katz has created an amazing program for children called "Nutrition Detectives." The free DVD's (ok, fine you pay for shipping and handling, about $1) teach kids about how to make wise food choices and what real nutrition means. I ordered ten to give to my family, friends and clients with children. I encourage you to do the same.
And be sure to check out Dr. Katz's amazing NuVal Nutritional Scoring System. We all would be wise to follow this EASY rating system (from 1-100) to judge the nutritional value of our food rather than the archaic and confusing labels the FDA currently requires. We have confused the public into thinking that Zone Bars are good for us and olive oil is bad because it's 'fattening'. It will change the way you think about what is "good for you". Even my favorite snack "Robert's Gourmet Veggie Booty" ranked LOWER than Doritos Baked Tortilla Chips Nacho Cheese . . . right up there with Lay's Classic Potato Chips! (See the ratings here.) It doesn't get into the nitty gritty of food and ingredients, but it's a better judge of nutrition than what we have now. Leave the algorhythms and crazy equations to the scientists and doctors (trust me, he tried to show us how they came up with these scores and it's more than anyone needs to learn!). You'll know immediately, on site, how healthy, overall, your food is.
Hands down, Dr. Mark Hyman was my favorite lecturer this weekend. He spoke with passion, conviction, and more importantly from the heart. He himself lived in poor health and illness and single handedly, altered the trajectory of his health and changed his fate. You can read his story here. He is a proponent of 'functional medicine' and curing the CAUSE of disease and illness, not alleviating symptoms with a pill. My favorite quote of the weekend: "Depression isn't caused by a lack of Prozac!" Hilarious. Yet, what is the first thing a doctor will prescribe to a depressed patient? I think you know the answer to that one. He also stated: "A fork is the most powerful tool you have to change your health and the environment." I couldn't agree more.
I could go on and on and on and ON about Dr. Hyman and how much I respect and value him as a leader in this profession. I can with certainty and confidence stand behind his work and his writings. I highly recommend his Ultraprevention, or any of his books.
I hope to someday have the honor to work with Dr. Hyman and learn from him and stand beside him in his fight for reform and change. I'm going to start by making an appointment!

FINALLY! Fit In Your Jeans By Friday!

No, it’s not the title of my latest fad diet (because I am SUCH a big fan of those, right?!?) But it is the title of Kim Kardashian’s latest series of workout DVD’s and I have to say I am a fan. First, because I created the routines for two of the three workouts, and second because I am on camera with Kim, leading her and you through the upper body and lower body strength and toning DVD’s. It was a lot of work, but Kim and I had so much fun and I am really proud of the product we developed together.
It was very important to me to create a series that would not be perceived as just another ‘fluff’ product endorsed by a celebrity to make money. So I went full steam ahead with Kim and she took it on like a champ. I have to say, the girl works hard. She was always asking for more training time and more rehearsals. I was very impressed by her drive and motivation and really put her all into this project.
For you, fitness enthusiasts, that means you get a REAL workout. One that will challenge you and deliver results. I think this is the first time many of you will see me in a more straight up fitness title, as opposed to dance. Although I may not be shaking my hips as much, Kim and I have a really great rapport and I think that will show in the DVD’s. So I hope you enjoy working out with us as much fun as we had making it. Although, we DID miss Super Bowl Sunday, we both feel it was worth it.
The DVD’s are also much more stylized than all of my other workouts which is really fun to see. Wait until you see the set, the colors and the FASHION. Although, ultimately, it is about the workout, this series provides a totally different feel than all my others and personally, I LOVED IT! I just think they look beautiful. More like these to come . . .

I was just with Kim here in NYC yesterday and I think the greatest reward for me is seeing her confidence grow. She told me she feels such a difference when she is working out. We didn’t CHANGE her beautiful curves and shape for which she is so well known. She is still Kim. But she stands a little taller and feels a lot stronger, poised for anything. Knowing that I helped her kick start a new habit and new way of life is something I hope to be able to do with you, and everyone who has the desire to commit to themselves and their health.

To get a behind the scenes look at our shoot, click here! And you can BUY the DVD’s exclusively on line here.

Disgusted

I know I recently wrote a post regarding my amazing weekend in NYC at ECA. And it may seem to0 early for another one, but I feel so compelled by the article at which I am staring right now, that I had to get this out! I am disgusted, shocked and angered by a recent issue of the member only publication "Costco Connection" So your first question may be: "Jennifer reads magazines from Costco?" And rightly so. Not really. Actually, I believe Costco might contribute to our culture's demise. I certainly do not promote the processed and packaged foods that line the shelves and aisles of most grocery stores, much less in bulk form. Regardless, it happened to come to my apartment here in NYC addressed to my grandmother. And although my first impulse was to throw it out, I figured I would peruse it to see what America is reading. Or more appropriately, what Costco is pushing.

Originally, I was disgusted at the cover celebrating "The People's Court", Costco's food court. It illustrates many happy people, young and old, eating pizza, Coke, hot dogs and Polish sausage and praising it's "25 years of serving up value." How about 25 years of serving up heart attacks, fat, processed food and an overdose of sodium? I think that would have been a better tag-line. And I am well aware of the state of our economy, however, eating cheap processed foods does not equal value. It is a recipe for sky rocketing health costs, hospital stays and an increasing amount of people becoming overweight, unhealthy and depressed.

However, I am very cognizant of how big industry works with millions of dollars in advertising spent to ensure people spend money at their store, with a blatant disregard for our society's health, wellness and overall happiness. So while I am disgusted, I am not shocked.

What I found on page 49 of this issue however, did absolutely appal, shock and infuriate me. Jorge Cruise, a proclaimed "internationally acclaimed health expert" wrote an article called "Shrinking Those Waists" about his new report/book, "The Belly Fat Cure". In it, he promotes his theory, the "S/C Value," which he claims is the key to eating smarter instantly and start losing belly fat by ensuring you get the right amount of sugar and carbs. Ok, I'm having trouble even knowing where to start here . . . let me begin by quoting one of Jorge's 'success' stories. "The best thing is . . . I got to eat things I never though I could eat, like chocolate, Doritos and ice cream." WOW. That sounds like the epitome of a healthy person, doesn't it? Yes, Karen's waistline may have shrunk, but at what cost? Can you tell me what about Doritos and ice cream resembles good health? And balance and nutrients? BUT she DID follow Jorge's wonderful "S/C Value" which aims for no more than 15 grams of sugar and six servings of carbohydrates each day.

Well, I don't know Jorge. I have a steaming bowl of oatmeal or barley with stewed figs or prunes, ginger, cinnamon and almond slices, plus agave nectar every day, and my belly is pretty darn flat. (I think I am already over double your daily recommended intake of carbs and sugar!!!) But I know what is in my food and where it comes from . . . there are no hidden ingredients. It is a whole meal complete with loads of cancer preventing fiber, and natural, digestible sugars. And it sustains me well into the mid afternoon. I don't snack. I am full and satisfied. And I eat it because it is what MY body needs.

What really angers and astounds me are Jorge's answers to the questions posted. When one person inquired about carbohydrate portions, Jorge replies:

Using the S/C Value, one serving of carbs is anything that has 5 to 20 grams of carbohydrates. One of my favorite examples is 27 Cheez-Its; with just 17 grams of carbs, this snack counts as a 1 on the S/C Value. The added bonus is that Cheez-Its don't have any sugar, so their S/C Value is 0/1.

Again, words can not describe how upsetting this is to me. Millions of people look to Jorge for health and wellness expertise and he is serving up this?!? In another question he disses bananas. In a nutshell, Jorge would rather you eat CHEEZ-ITS than a banana because of their "S/C Value". Do me a favor. Go read the ingredients on a box of Cheez-Its and compare it to the ingredients of a banana. And then tell me, honestly, what does your body intuitively decide is better nourishment? Last time I checked, there were no CHEEZ-IT trees or bushes in my back yard. Not to mention the suggestion that people now have to count how many Cheez-Its they are eating. A sure way for people to begin obsessive calorie counting and mind games when it comes to eating. Trust me, I've been there. And how many people do you know stop at a mere 27 Cheez-Its? Those snacks are filled with ingredients that induce addictive eating.

Then comes my favorite part. In the last question on the page, a reader requests a sample breakfast for "The Belly Fat Cure". Here is Jorge's recommendation:

A quick and easy breakfast on The Belly Fat Cure is two Eggo waffles with butter, two to three scrambled eggs (depending on how hungry you are) with salt and pepper, and one Morningstar Farms sausage patty. This whole breakfast has just a 2/2 S/C Value. Or you could add one more sausage patty and skip the waffles and your entire breakfast would have a 0/1 S/C value.

Excuse me, I have to pick up my jaw off the floor. I wonder how much money Jorge has been paid to mention Eggo and Morningstar Farms in his recommendation? This disgusts and truly incites me. I don't have to read the label of these products to know the nutritional value of these foods (aside from the eggs . . . which I'm surprised he didn't throw out some brand name) is pretty much zilch. Very little fiber. Very processed. And very wrong. If time and convenience are his motivation, I bet I could whip up a healthier, more nutritious and satisfying meal faster than you can say "Leggo my Ego."

Here is the worst part. After reading this article, I of course went to Jorge's website where I discovered a picture of him and a smiling Dr. Oz, Jorge's mentor. I am ashamed that Jorge insinuates that someone as well renowned and admired in the field of health and wellness as Dr. Oz endorses his philosophy and recommendations. And nor am I exactly thrilled that Dr. Oz would support Jorge's efforts if he recommends foods such as the items mentioned above.

If this is what the health and wellness industry has become, we are in trouble and have a long, hard fight ahead of us. It's time for these so called 'experts' to stop lying to people and promoting absurd quick schemes for weight loss just to make a buck. As fitness professionals, health and wellness consultants, and leaders in our industry, it is our duty to guide people inward to re-discover their intuitive sense of eating. To encourage them to take responsibility for their own health and happiness rather than relying on one size-fits-all plans to reduce a number on a scale. To inspire them to live up to the amazing potential each and every one of us has inside. Only then will we have a happier, healthier and more loving world.

Greetings From the Big Apple!

Hello!  Well, here I am.  About two weeks into my new adventure back here on the East Coast. It feels so good to be close to wonderful friends and an amazing support system. As with most changes and transitions, there have been some rough spots.  First, it's cold. But honestly, the weather has not bothered me nearly as much as I thought that it would.  I have not been 'working' in the traditional sense as much as I was in January and the beginning of February, and I find that difficult.  I realize that much of my identity is centered around work and what I do.
Which is why this past weekend was so inspiring and uplifting for me.  There is a fitness convention every year in NYC called ECA.  Many of my dear friends whom I have had the honor to dance and teach with were presenting this weekend.  It was so wonderful to re-connect with friends whom, even though I may not have seen them in years, understand the heart of who I am and my soul.  I love to dance.  And to find a space where I could express myself with movement and be TRULY AUTHENTIC.  Well, it's sheer bliss.  And priceless.
There was so much love and joy in some of these rooms that it was palpable.  Yes, there was 'learning' going on, as many were there to pick up some new moves or memorize some new choreography, but there was also laughter, expression, freedom and healing going on.  Which differentiated the dance and movement style classes, I believe, from some of the other more 'traditional' fitness workshops that my friend attended.  She didn't seem to have the same sense of ecstatic-ness that I did coming out the door.  Of course we learned moves, many of which I am sure will find their way into my choreography, but we were also opening ourselves up to the world to say "Here I am and watch me move!"  Even if I don't get the steps.  I am WORKING IT OUT!  Which is why I LOVE this stuff.  I didn't care how many calories I was burning.  I didn't care how much exercise I was getting. I was in love with myself and my body for being able to express emotion through movement.  Joy, joy.  It made the small amount of pain after oh so worth it.
I'd like to thank my wonderful friends and teachers Tony Stone, (Who by the way was nominated for 'Diva Of the Year'.  Work, my man!), Christiane Reiter (This was my first class with this dynamo dancer . . . thank you my love!) and Shaun T.  for helping me remember what it's all about and sharing your talents and love with myself and everyone in that room.
And of course, I can not finish this blog without a big shout out of love and thanks to my soul sister, Misty.  One of the most beautiful souls I have ever met.  To move is to feel.  To feel is to heal and to heal is to love.
I encourage all of you to find your voice, your soul, your spirit through movement.  And you don't have to be a dance diva like Tony or infomercial superstar like Shaun T.  You just need to find a modality that will unlock all your creativity and passion that lies underneath.  It's there. Go find it!  And let it burst forth.  (I've suggested some new songs below . . . try them out and see how they move YOU!)

Preventing Cancer . . . and SNOPES!

So my aunt, always a diligent watchdog for health and research updates, recently sent me an email entitled "Cancer Update From John's Hopkins" with the following prelude:

"AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY ('TRY' IS THE KEY WORD) AND ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHN HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY."

The email then goes on to list numerous statements regarding cancer cells, how they develop and thrive, and certain recommendations to minimize the risk of cancer.  Some of these are phenomenal.  Including the statement that cancer cells "thrive in an acidic environment" and my personal favorite:

"Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit.  A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment.  Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit.  Learn to relax and enjoy life."

I was SO impressed with the list, that I decided to see if it was all really to good to be true.  Was a highly respected medical institution, one that is regarded by the government as a leader in medical research and development really promoting a more holistic and preventative program for disease?

Apparently not.  When I Googled "Cancer Update", a page from "Snopes" immediately popped up.  If you are unfamiliar with "Snopes.com" it is a site that debunks many of the myths that we often receive in those annoying emails that are forwarded to us by family, friends, and often enemies!  :)

"Snopes.com" did in fact categorize the email that perpetrated the John's Hopkins study as false.  (To see the email that is being forwarded, click here.)

What a shame.  Because it all makes so much sense.  Common sense.  Do I believe that if you follow all the recommendations on the list to a "T" that you are guaranteed to live cancer free? Absolutely not.  Do I agree that the statements on the list put you at a lower risk for contracting any sort of disease, virus, bacteria, etc. and in general will guide you toward leading a more fulfilling, healthy and vibrant life?  ABSOLUTELY.

Unfortunately, people may go to Snopes, see this email listed as 'false' and completely discredit anything it supports.  Giving people another excuse to say "See. It doesn't matter what I eat, do or think. There is nothing I can do to prevent a life threatening disease such as Cancer."  and go off and enjoy a Big Mac, large fries and Coca-Cola.

I hope that is not the case.  I hope that, regardless of the listing on 'Snopes' that people will read the email and say, "Yes, this all makes sense.  Naturally and intuitively".

I hope.

Embarking On a New Adventure

Well, here I am in NYC, freezing my you-know -what off for my first weekend of schooling at the Institute For Integrative Nutrition. Back in school. Wow. I am excited to learn more about a topic which, as you can imagine, I am already very passionate about. I am not sure if it will feed or help alleviate the neurosis. I am hoping the latter! It is time for everyone, myself included, to have a healthy relationship with food and allow it to enhance, as opposed to rule, or lives.
We seek out healthy relationships everywhere else and work SO hard to maintain and strive for balance in our relationships with our friends, loved ones, spouses, family, money . . . why not food?
What we choose to put in our mouths and consequently our body, our vital organs, the very system that keeps us alive and kicking, can NOT be underestimated. Our society has been brainwashed by the government and it’s unabashed support of poor health habits. If you haven’t already seen it, just take a look at this advertisement for high fructose corn syrup.

SERIOUSLY!?!? I saw this on TV and my jaw dropped to the floor. I could not believe they allowed this on the air. The problem is this: PEOPLE WILL BELIEVE THIS CRAP! It’s hard for me to fathom. If you want to see some of the FACTS about this genetically modified ingredient, watch this one.
This is just one example (and to me the most blatant disregard for public health to date) of how agriculture companies are willing to sacrifice our nation’s health and well being for a buck. And the government supports and subsidizes the very industries that produce this crap. Very scary.
It’s really time to wake up. Intuitively, we all know what to feed ourselves. What sustains and vitalizes us. Let’s get clear about what is propaganda and what is truly good for us. Listen to your intuition.
No, I will not tell you the ‘new and improved’ Lucky Charms cereal is good for you because it is now made with “whole grains”. No, I will not agree with you that high fructose corn syrup, like other sugars, is ‘fine in moderation’. You know better than that.
As I continue to learn and grow throughout my course, you will probably find more and more of my blogs related to food and nutrition. I am excited to add this component to my areas of expertise and look forward to sharing all of my knowledge and revelations with you!
Here’s to a happy, healthy and CLEAR new year!

2009 and Resolutions

I write this first blog of the New Year from my very own bed! I am so excited to say that, as I haven't been in my own bed in two months. I have been living out of suitcases for weeks now and it was fun. But finally, I have a place to be with my furniture, my kitchen stuff, my clothes. It may not be my home, but it is a temporary place for me to hang my hat that feels settled and comfortable, and for that, I am so grateful. (Thank you, Cory!)
It gives me a sense of peace and stability from which I am better able to write, work and move forward in achieving my goals. Speaking of goals, why is it we only resolve to become better, achieve more, change bad habits, DO more at the beginning of a new year? SO much pressure. So this year, I am resolving to DO less. But accomplish more. Stop spending so much time surfing the Internet unless I am specifically searching for something or paying bills. Start hanging out on my bed more and writing, whether it be for my blog or in my journal, or reading. Stop wasting so much time and energy thinking about how many calories I ate and what I am going to have for dinner and start focusing on how I can help others or spend more time sharing, relaxing and laughing with good friends.
Granted, I will be pretty busy for the foreseeable future, but if I can better identify my time suckers and manage them, I can better get everything accomplished that I set out to do for 2009 while still 'doing' less.
I will be going back to school to get a degree in Integrative Nutrition and Holistic Wellness in New York City. I look forward to being back on the east coast for a few months and re-connecting with old friends. I look forward to sharing the knowledge I gain there with all of you to assist you in reaching your health and lifestyle goals.
And since everyone knows that no one ever seems to make good on their 'New Year Resolution', if I don't end up doing less, no big deal, right? Take the pressure of yourself. Set goals and re-assess as needed. And know if you don't attain the lofty resolution you decided to try at 11:37pm on December 31st, 2007, you can always set more attainable goals for yourself at any date. Why not your birthday? Or next Tuesday? Or possibly March 4th? It doesn't matter. You have a chance to re-invent, re-create, or re-define yourself every day you wake up.

Getting Your Zen Any Way You Can

The home page on my computer is the New York Times.  Most of the time, the headlining story, especially lately, tells a tale of woe, a sagging economy or a political scandal.  But not today. Today's top story was about meditation.  And punk.  Yes, a whole article devoted to how people typically classified as "punk" are attending meditation sessions made just for them.  Normally, I would have thought it to be somewhat gimmicky, especially upon reading about the statue of buddha with a mohawk. However, lately, my meditation sessions have been less than focused and I could use a little organized sit to get me back on track.  And whatever makes people feel comfortable and invites them into a space where they can practice something as beneficial and healing as meditation, I'm all for.  Whether that is a zafu, a yoga mat, a pew in a Catholic church or under a tree in the middle of the woods. And as I type I realize that even if my morning sits seem distracted or drifting, I have a whole day to find solace somewhere.

Food and Health and Being a SKINNY BITCH!

It's been bombarding me lately. All the talk, news, buzz about ORGANIC. So I saw it as a sign to blog about it.
How important is it really?  I'll tell you what.  Pick up a copy of the SKINNY BITCH book by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin and you'll never want to touch anything that could remotely be considered an animal or a by-product of an animal again.  That includes DAIRY people.  And eggs.  And fish.  Of course I really got going on the book right after my egg white fritatta yesterday and a trip to Maui in which I consumed enough fish to feed a small family.  Hey, when in Rome!
Anyway, back to the book.  I've heard about it for a long time and even met the authors to discuss their upcoming fitness DVD's by the same title.  But oddly enough, never read it.  It happened to be sitting on my friend's shelf, calling my name the night prior to my departure to paradise.  Looked like an easy read which is EXACTLY what you want on a vacation to Hawaii, right?
In a nutshell, they support everything I've said for the past two years or so.   Plant based diets are best.  However, they go into much more graphic detail about the meat and poultry industry that I can't even begin to discuss here.  READ IT.  It will blow your mind and keep you as far away from that section of the grocery store as you can possibly be.  Granted, I didn't follow up on their accounts and sources, but just the idea of the possibility of what goes on in the ranching and farming industries, and to what extent our government goes to protect corporate interests at the expense of OUR HEALTH disgusts me. I've been bitching about it recently as well ... somehow I am paying an arm and a leg for health insurance which won't cover the doctors I see to prevent me from getting sick (i.e. holistic health practitioners like chiropractors, herbalists, meditation healers, etc.) but supports a health care system that thrives on keeping people sick and then prescribing drugs to help them 'get better'.  Bullshit.  I haven't been sick in about six years (aside from a nasty 24 hour stomach flu here and there) and that's because I spend the money to take care of myself.  Someone reimburse me for that.  Not likely.
Ok, so I've gone off on a total tangent.  But it's all related.  Diet and disease.  It is not rocket science.  You know what is good for you and what isn't.  I've been saying this for years, and Rory and Kim will back me up.  READ YOUR FOOD LABELS!!!!  Do you know what hell "sodium acetate, red 40 or disodium inosinate" is?  My spell check doesn't even recognize these words.  Yet they are just three of the unfathomable ingredients in Doritos Cool Ranch "100 Calorie" mini bites.  Ah yes, shit food posing as 'diet food'.  Because, somehow, if it's smaller and in a little package, it's better for you.  These people are smoking crack.
Sorry for the somewhat 'strong' language here.  Not my usual tone, I know. But sometimes, it's the only way to go.  And Rory and Kim will set your ass straight in the same way.  Straightforward, direct, no b.s.  I'm all about it.
And click here for another great article on the home page of the New York Times today in the Health section.  People so often confuse organic with vegetarian or vegan.  NOT the same.  Organic is a term reserved for HOW food is produced or grown: without pesticides, toxins, or hormones. (that's the short version of the definition!) Whereas vegan or vegetarian refers to WHAT food is or made with.  Basically a plant based diet.  My favorite quote from the article is this one: "If you don't eat meat at every meal, if meat becomes more of a side dish than a centerpiece, you can fill the plate with healthy organic food for about the same price." Which debunks the myth that organic always means more money.  NOT TRUE!
My recommendations?  Read all you can about nutrition and health and decide for yourself.  Do you REALLY want to get healthy?  Do you REALLY want to have more energy and as Rory and Kim so fabulously put it, become a "Skinny Bitch"?!?  Then toughen up and take the steps necessary to put you on that path.  I'm not saying you have to go drastic.  Start making small changes. Email me with any questions you may have.  It's not about saying 'NO' to food.   It's about saying 'YES' to a healthy, vibrant and happy life. Love, Live and Laugh.

Lucky.

I can not believe how unbelievably blessed and lucky I am. I spent the past 24 hours packing, moving, hauling, driving a way too large U-Haul afraid I would kill someone (happy to report, I didn't. However, I did manage to knock out a light!). I am exhausted, drained. My feet are the size of a small child and my face looks as if someone has siphoned every last drop of color out of it.
But I am thrilled. In a deadbeat tired sort of way. One very kind and benevolent gentleman has opened his home to me, and his back house, and I am in my own little piece of quiet paradise. Yes, I am amidst boxes and suitcases and just stuff. But I have a place to lay my oh so weary head and allow it to be heavy. And allow myself to sleep as long as I want to without having to worry about arising for work, or a shoot, or a meeting or packing or getting to a class. NOTHING. Who knows, I may sleep until noon. Probably not, but just knowing I can means all the world to me. I have no plans. Not for tomorrow. Not really for the next week. Nor for the month. Day by glorious day. Sunrise until beautiful sunset. I can do whatever I please.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank three people for today. Jim, your moving skills are stellar. You may want to quit BOTH of your day jobs. Although, I don't think the pay would be as good. Andre. Your constant support and generosity of spirit astound me. I adore you.
And Dan. For giving me a place to rest my head and hang my hat for a while. And to all of those who have supported and encouraged me on this journey. Thank you. Thank you. And thank you.

On The Turn Of A Dime

Life will change. Just like that. It's so funny. I looked back at my blog in April and how excited and full of life I was upon beginning my hosting job with the JUICE. Wow. I wish I could say my enthusiasm and passion for the position lasted the entire seven months or so that I was a part of the program. Yes, "was". As in past tense. As of yesterday, I will no longer be a host with the JUICE. I was laid off. Or dismissed. Or whatever you want to call it. And I believe I felt more exhilaration, more excitement and more joy at the news of being 'let go' than I did when I was hired. It was freeing, as if a hundred pound weight had been lifted off my shoulders. My friends hear it in my voice, the tone they heard when they would speak with me five months ago. My usual enthusiasm and passion for life had been slowly squashed. But within 15 minutes, restored. As is with many things, the job was not all it cracked up to be. I LOVED the people I met through my work, I LOVED the stories I got to create. But the day to day struggles were no longer worth it.
But hey, I asked for it. I wanted to host a show and not necessarily in fitness. Be careful what you ask for . . . yup, I got it. And then some. The lesson in all of this? Be VERY specific when asking.
Needless to say, I'M BACK!!!! I am just as excited about moving on to the next chapter in my life as when I first began the job, if not more so. I don't even know where I might live in the next few months. Maybe back to L.A. Maybe up north to San Fran. New York? Who knows? I'm not quite sure what the future holds but I am giddy about the possibilities.

Right and Wrong

This past weekend, after witnessing some events that, to me, demonstrated much wrong in this world, I definitely found right and chose to reflect upon those things during my drive through the canyon en route home, observing a pink tinged night sky that served as a backdrop against the mountains. That was the first right thing. New beautiful innocent babies. They are SO right. U2's "With Or Without You" . . . another very right thing. Red wine and bloody mary's. VERY right. Singing out loud and car dancing. Makes the world right. Good music that makes you feel. Friends that make you laugh and laughter itself. That can't be wrong. Right? So while I could make a list of wrong things, I so much rather harp on the right things. Some may call it optimistic. Others, delusional and escapist. I call it me. For better or for worse.

Yes, It HAS Been A While

Hello everyone! I do understand April was the last time I entered a blog. Things have been a little nutty to say the least. I have moved my life, shifted my focus and embarked on a new career path, all in six months! I have been blessed with many amazing experiences. Everything from the theater to five star restaurants, horse placenta facials to weekends in Palm Springs. It's been a whirlwind. If you haven't checked out the site for my latest show, the JUICE make sure you go to http://www.ocregister.com/juice. I am no longer on every day, but you should see me pop up every now and again.

Yesterday for the show, I found myself sitting in front of two psychics. Normally this is not something I would seek out. But for the show, why not, right? I wrote a blog for the show and thought it might be relevant to share it here.
So here it is! Enjoy.

Spooky Psychics

October 21st, 2008, 1:36 pm · Post a Comment · posted by juicegirl

I’ve never been much of a Halloween girl but I recently caught the spirit, no pun intended, when I read an article this month on Orange County’s hottest psychics. Maybe there is something to this haunting holiday? So I decided to get ’spooked’ by the listed clairvoyants, spiritual counselors, and others who can ’see things’ I don’t. Up until now, I’ve resisted the tempation to wander into those storefronts with crystal balls and purple lights. I am a big believer in faith and fate and tuning into my own higher power to guide me. But I couldn’t resist when I was approached to do a piece for the JUICE. My curiosity got the better of me. Cat be darned.

My first stop was Camille and as I sat in the very intimate setting of her home, I admit I was nervous. There are some things you just don’t want to know. Camille possessed a very caring, gentle spirit which put me at ease, but as you’ll see on the JUICE, I definitely get a little flushed and anxious. She focused mostly on my career, and what she had to say definitely got me excited about the possibilities in front of me. After I recovered and my body temperature returned to normal, I was off to see Tara.

At first sight, Tara seemed like a cute young woman. I didn’t get as nervous around her that may have been due to the fact that we sat in a more open setting in the middle of the Crystal Cave in Costa Mesa. She was much more matter of fact about things . . . giving me very specific names (Robert? Dan? Chris? Are you out there?) and how they would play a part in my life. Tara also delved into my romantic life which was interesting. Of course, I had to ask the big one. “When will I get married?” Oddly enough, she confirmed the date, at lease the same month and year, that, oddly enough, I said to my hair stylist the weekend before.
And I don’t even have a boyfriend! I’m working backwards! The strangest fact she told me was that at some point, I would be doing an interview with Mike Meyers!

Walking away from the day I felt a little high on all the possibilities for my ongoing life journey. It was very cool to have these talented and spiritually connected ladies tell me things about myself, some of which I knew, others, offered perspective. But, I don’t necessarily think we need psychics to help us “see” our future. We all have the ability to tap into a power higher than ourselves to create our lives. They say life is a stage. Let’s not forget our actions, our words, our affirmations and our beliefs all play a part in our story.

CRAZY TIMES

Wow. Where to begin. In a nutshell my life has been an amazing and unexpected whirlwind for the past two months. To those of you who have sent me emails recently, thank you and I apologize for not returning them promptly or posting anything here lately. Allow me to tell the story . . .
So a few months back, I was approached at the gym one Saturday morning by an old friend whom I haven't seen in YEARS, telling me about an audition for a new internet show in Orange County which will be sponsored by the newspaper down there, and encouraging me to audition. Although I knew my friend was serious about it and it was a legitimate position, how many times have I heard this song and dance before? (What, ME jaded??? Nah . . . ) What the heck though. Like most opportunities, I follow up initially and see where it goes. I met with the producers and after our discussion in Orange County (did I mention the God awful drive from LA down the 5 freeway? Not the most scenic of drives), I am impressed with how much is invested in this project and encouraged to continue down this road.
However, on the Saturday they are holding "American Idol" type auditions, again down in Anaheim, I am feeling less than inspired to get dolled up, drive down there and go through the process of getting a number and doing my thing in front of a panel of 'judges'. But I do it, and am glad for it. I get this 'golden ticket' to the next round (essentially what we call a 'callback' in the 'biz') and this job and opportunity becomes a little more real.
After re-scheduling my second audition due to work and travel conflicts (which is a whole other story!) I finally get back down to the studio for my next 'test' on a Thursday in February. This time around I felt more comfortable, a little more nervous, as now I am seeing the potential of a fabulous new job, and at the same time, a little more confident. Quite a conflict of emotions to experience all at once!
To make a long story short (at least shorter), I am back down at the Orange County Register building four days later being offered a job. Holy shit. I don't believe it. Two weeks later, I am back at that building with a desk and a computer on my first day.
I am now the host of an exciting new daily new magazine style internet show for Orange County called THE JUICE.
It is something I have always wanted to do. Although my passion and love for dance and fitness will never die, I feel it was time to move on to something new and fresh and challenging. Just another chapter in the book of life.
So far, this job has been amazing. A lot of work, as I am not only hosting this show, but helping produce and write the show as well. Yes, I now go into an office every day (no more working from home til noon in my pj's!) But it is a trip I look forward to . . . every day is different and I am learning so much. And certainly, as with anything their have been challenges . . . I currently am looking for a home here where I am comfortable and feel part of the community (preferably within sight of the amazing beaches down here!) and living out of suitcases between here and LA in temporary housing. I can't find half of the things I own amongst the clutter and chaos of the new microcosm that has formed in my automobile.
But the opportunities to get out there and enjoy my life are amazing. I have been to the theater twice in the past month, discovered my favorite raw food restaurant and chef down here, met some really great people that I believe will become life long friends, and feel supported in a job that lifts me up every day. THAT is amazing.
Not to worry, however. Somehow amidst all this change and craziness, I am still shooting yet another DVD in about a week! It will be a Latin Dance workout for CRUNCH to hit shelves in the fall.
Sadly, my own projects have been put on hold, and not for a lack of desire or commitment (lack of time, maybe ... but not even that so much!)
The concept of my new fitness and health company is still in incubation and brewing, but maybe just simmering on the back burner for now. I hope to continue to inspire and motivate you, but now, in a different way! Starting April 28th, you'll be able to catch me EVERY DAY on the internet at ocregister.com/juice and although the content will not be what you are used to, I hope will find it entertaining and fun. I do!
Thank you all for your support and I'll continue blogging on this site (and listing great NEW MUSIC!) as time permits, but also on the new JUICE site. So check it out when you have some time this summer and you'll be able to see what I am up to.
Thank you all so much for your support and positive energy. I truly believe that I didn't make this job happen by myself. All of your help and encouragement along my journey made this possible. It's a testament to how powerful our thoughts can be and how your life can change when you least expect it in amazing ways.
Here's to the journey . . .

What a Weekend.

The past month has found me frustrated, sad and uninspired.  Things have been more difficult than usual to ‘deal with’ and I have been feeling particularly un-centered and misguided.  I can not seem to connect to that ‘inner voice’ that tells me where to go, what to do and whether to turn right, left or just stay where I am.  Not the most wonderful place to be when you feel you have big decisions in front of you.

I know that is a huge sign for me to stop, breathe more and meditate.  I was doing that back in L.A. with some increased yoga classes (when I didn’t necessarily feel like it) but after a weekend at home with family (which often presents more challenges to overcome internally) and lacking my usual resources or finding them more difficult to access, I feel completely off course in only a few short days.  And it’s not a good feeling.

This and sheer exhaustion led to mini-meltdowns in the middle of both Fort Lauderdale and Atlanta airports.  While I am sure these tears helped to get me on supposedly ‘over-booked’ flights to get be back to L.A. quicker, their source was very real.  And I have to remember, as uncomfortable as it was to go through, to not be able to stop the tears in front of hundreds of people, it was something that need to rise to the surface and release…. And release….. and release.  And I know there will be more to come.  And there will always be more to come.  Because as much as I would love to constantly be the calm in the middle of the storm, I haven’t quite mastered that technique yet.  But I will continue to try.

Until then, a good cry never hurt anyone.

Friday Night Movie

I love going to the movies by myself.  I forget how much so since I don't do it often enough.
But I was feeling particularly lonely on this Friday evening and was in the mood for a totally cheesy and mindless "chick flick".  "Definitely Maybe" seemed to fit the bill quite nicely.  I wasn't going for the amazing acting.  I was going, being the good sappy romantic I am, for a good cry.  I was due.
Some of the most wonderful things about going to the movies by yourself:
1. You can go any time you please without regards to anyone else's schedule.
2.  I can make my popcorn at home and bring it with me without a friend of date being embarrassed by it.
3.  I can sit wherever I damn well please in the theater and I'm more likely to find empty seats on either side of me since I don't have to 'move one seat down' to accommodate another.
4.  For the most part, complete silence.  No one to even make comments to.
5.  Darkness.
6.  I can cry at the cheesiest parts of the movie and not have to turn to see my friend/companion smirking or laughing at me.
7.  Sitting in the theater as the closing credits roll with no concern for the people leaving around you.  Note:  I am still crying and I can do it all by myself for as long as I want.
8.  Dreaming, as I walk out of the theater that my life will have the same fairy tale happy ending.

The only downside to going to the movie by yourself, is coming home by yourself and being by yourself after it.

Jury Duty 2008

Well, here I sit, sequestered in a jury room in downtown L.A. doing my good civil service. At this point, I don't know why I didn't just throw the darn thing away since they can't track whether or not you received your notice. I am the type of person that would do something like that and then feel guilty and lose sleep over it. So here I am.

And I should have brought my laptop, but lo and behold, for some reason I didn't, so I am hogging the public computer writing about the many observations I've had thus far.

First, no one is really inclined to talk to each other, get to know each other etc. Everyone pretty much sits in isolation sipping their Starbuck's (at least we have one next door!) and keeping to themselves on their Crackberry's, laptops (alas, some people were wiser than I) and reading.

I am too antsy to read right now. Wouldn't mind doing a yoga pose or two. Would it be strange to bust out a headstand?

I have already combed the room for good looking men. No one really caught my eye, but I haven't looked that hard either. Although, I did catch one guy looking at me as I glanced up from my YogiTimes.

I can feel people staring at me wondering when the hell I am going to get off the computer. I am feeling less than generous today to share.

Note to all potential jury servers: Bring a laptop if you have it. At least in downtown L.A. they have wireless.

I could also use this time to meditate since I woke up late and missed my morning meditation.

I've opted out of that too. I really just want to sit on the internet all day and explore facebook and watch youtube. Isn't this the perfect time for just that? For some reason I feel I have a free pass to not work and engage in mindless activity that I never allow myself to do, even on the weekend. I now see how people distract themselves with such fodder while working a desk job.

I am not even missing my workout today. We'll see how I feel about that if I have to be down here tomorrow. I'll most likely be found running laps around the courthouse.

Things I Hate

Traffic. The 405. Missing my yoga class because of the previous 2.

Things I Love

My bed. A glass of wine after a long day of shooting fitness routines. Letting my tummy go. Peanut M&M's! Company of a friend when you just don't want to be alone. Wiping off layers of make-up. Finding the glasses I was looking for at Ikea. Even better? They're only two dollars!
Bach Cello Suite #1 in G Major. A hot long shower. Watching contestants tear up over the joy of 'making it to Hollywood' on American Idol. Being asked to sub a yoga class.

How Appropriate January 27th, 2008

woke up this morning feeling less than wonderful.  i am longing for the days of no talking, meditating 12 hours a day and a feeling of freedom and true internal happiness and peace.  today did not start out as one of those days.  actually i don't think any of my days this week have started out like that.  earlier this morning i looked at my bag full of glass and plastic recyclables and thought:  great.  our recycle bin is full again (mostly due to the fact that i am the only one that takes it out on fridays and i shirked my duties and was away the friday before) so i guess i'll just have to leave it here inside as an eye sore b/c it has been raining so much and it's just not right to keep it outside unless its in the bin. (yes, i have such lengthy random thoughts often) so i succumbed to the fact that this was the way it was going to be.  a scene mimicing sarah cynthia sylvia stout from shel silverstein's famous poem.  cut to an hour later, i am in my kitchen standing up eating (damn me again. . . . can't i ever sit down and eat a meal?) and i hear the melody of john mayer's "waiting on the world to change" and all i can think of is that dance from 'so you think you can dance' that every single contestant had to perform.  although it was another great creation by wade robinson, seeing all ten dancers do the same damn thing resulted in me no longer really enjoying that song.  however, this morning, it is exactly what i needed.  as i looked out my back window to the driveway below, i saw the homeless guy (at least i think he's homeless) with his shopping cart full of bottles, cans, etc. and his old school 'ghetto blaster' boom box.  sweet.  i turn to look at my overflowing bag of recyclables, again look out the window at that kind lovely man digging through the huge trash bin, finish the muffin i am chewing in my mouth and think 'right on'.  unlocking my door and grabbing the bag, i don't even have to walk down the full flight of steps . . . my homeless crony meets me halfway and takes my load of plastic and glass and along with it, calms my neurosis for cleanliness and clutter.  i feel such compassion and love for this man . . . and gratitude for his assistance.  and realize that man probably will never know how much he helped me today . . . and similarly, none of us know when we are helping others.   we may think we are just collecting trash.

and i continue . . . to wait on the world to change.  but i'll try to do my part today.  and i feel better.
